Selection Menu

With the selection menu in Verbum, a menu of common commands will appear in resources when you select text, making these annotation and study tools accessible with just a couple of clicks. In this brief article, you’ll discover which features the menu contains and how to turn the selection menu on or off.

Selection Menu Commands

With the menu enabled, select text in any resource to display it. There are three basic areas of the selection menu that change depending on the kind of resource you have open and the amount of text you have selected.

1. Interactive bar

The top section of the selection menu features a variety of options, some of which change depending on the resource you're using and the amount of text you've selected. Here are all of the commands you'll find:

  • Copy: Copies the text (and its citation) for pasting elsewhere.

  • Search

    • When you select a single word in a Bible with a reverse-interlinear, the resulting action depends on the Prefer Lemmas Program Setting.
      • If this is set to Yes, then this runs a Morph search on the underlying original language lemma
      • If this is set to No, then this runs a Bible search on the selected word (and the same is true for Bibles without reverse-interlinears irrespective of the Prefer Lemmas setting)
    • When you select multiple words, this runs a Bible search for your selected text.

    • In a nonbiblical resource, this runs a Books search for the selected text.

  • Study: Opens the most appropriate guide, unless no fitting guide can be found in which case it runs an All search. For example:

    • When you select a biblical word, this command attempts to open a Bible Word Study on that word.

    • When you select a word or a short phrase that isn't in the Bible like "divine sonship," this command tries to open a Topic Guide.

    • When you select more than 5 words in a Bible, this opens a Passage Guide on the verse where the selected text occurs.

  • Look UpWhen you select a single word or short phrase like "Kingdom of God," this opens the relevant dictionary or lexicon to the selected word’s listing.

  • Share: Creates a sharable slide of the selected text in the Media tool.

  • : When the Bible is your active resource, or when you have different translations of a nonbiblical resource in your Library, you'll find the compare text button, which opens the Text Comparison tool to the passage you selected.

  • : If you can’t find the command you’re looking for in the selection menu, click this button to open the full context menu.

2. Highlighting bar

The middle section is the highlighting bar. Here, you’ll find:

  • : Adds a note to the selected text.

  • : Opens the Highlighting tool.

  • In between these buttons, the menu displays the six highlighting styles you’ve used most recently as buttons illustrating the style.

3. Copy verse (for Bibles only)

The final section will only display when your active resource is the Bible. Here, you’ll discover several options that affect how copied text is displayed after pasting.

  • Styled: pastes your selected text in the last-used style from the Copy Bible Verse tool.

  • Lines: pastes your selected text (complete with reference) with each verse on its own line.

  • Text Only: pastes only the text of the verse, with everything else (chapter and verse numbers, for instance) stripped out.

Turn the Selection Menu On/Off

You can turn the selection menu on or off in Program Settings. To find these settings, select Tools > Utilities > Program Settings, and then scroll down to the Text Display section. Click Yes to activate the menu within your resources, or click No to deactivate it. This option is set to Yes by default.
