Using Journals

There are many journal series available in Verbum, covering a wide range of focus areas, topics as well as articles on biblical passages.

Note: This feature is available to all users.

This article shows how to use Verbum tools and capabilities to find journal articles that are directly relevant to your particular study focus. There are four main ways to do this:

  1. Using the Factbook
  2. Using Guides
  3. Using Searches
  4. Using the Library

Note: Verbum only displays results from journals you own.

Using the Factbook

One of the easiest ways to access journal articles relevant to a biblical passage or a particular topic (such as a person, place, or theme) is by using the Factbook. Here's how:

  1. Open the Factbook.
  2. Enter a topic.
  3. Expand the Journals section, and choose from the listed articles. Each article listed in this section has been tagged with the topic you entered in the Factbook.

Selecting any entry opens the specified journal to the appropriate article:

Note: The journal articles that appear in the Journals section depend on which Factbook Lens you are using. For example, the Library lens surfaces top articles that you own, while the Discover lens suggests articles relevant to your topic but not currently in your library.

Using Guides

Most Guides feature a Journals section that displays journal entries tagged with the specific passage or topic you're studying. The Passage Guide, for example, reveals journal articles relevant to the passage you entered. Click an article to open the journal to that entry.

Note: There's a search option at the bottom of the section. If you hover over it, Verbum displays the search syntax it would use. We'll look at this search syntax later in this article.

Search Syntax For Journals

Similarly, the Topic Guide has a Journals section, which displays journal articles tagged with the topic you're studying.

You can also use the All Search to find relevant articles. The search demonstrated in the Passage Guide above showed:

journalArticle:references:bible.leb2:Genesis

The key components of this search string are:

  • The journalArticle label indicates the type of tagging you're searching for.
  • The references label is the passage range covered by the outline, in this case, we're searching for a Bible reference.

Click here for more information on using Labels in Searches.

Use the following label types as you search for journal articles:

  • Title ~ "..." — The title of the article
  • Author ~ "..." — List of article writers’ names
  • Topics ~ — List of topic data type references associated with the article
  • References ~ <...> — List of other associated data type references
  • Date ~ — Date data type reference specifying the publication date of the article
  • Editor ~ "..." — List of article editors’ names

Note: You can combine different attributes, such as biblical references and topics to refine the search.

Using the Library

To find and open journals within your Library, click the Library icon Library - New icon on the toolbar and use the filters on the left to select Journals.

You can use additional filters, such as Subject, Author, or Series to focus on journals you're particularly interested in. Click any journal to open it.
