Using the Library

You can access all of the books, courses, journals and interactive resources in Verbum using the Library.

Open the Library

To open your library, click the Library icon image-0.png in the toolbar (You can also open the Library in a floating window by right-clicking the Library icon, or by pressing Cmd+L (Mac) or Ctrl+L (Windows). A menu will appear showing an alphabetical list of all of your resources. You can search the list by entering a title, author, or keyword in the search window. Selecting a resource opens it in a new panel.

View Modes

The library is viewable in three modes. These can be selected from the Views icon in the Library toolbar.

  • Cover View — Displays the covers of your resources in a grid.

  • Tile View — Displays the covers of your resources in a vertical list, along with author, resource category, and tags

  • Details View — Displays your resources in a vertical list with multiple columns showing detailed information about each item.

Refining Your Search

You can refine your search in several ways:

  1. Limit your search results to a specific collection or series: Click All Resources and select a collection or series, such as English Bibles.

  1. Switch to Details View, and sort your search result by Author, Title, or other field by clicking the heading. To show or hide headings, right click any of the headings. You can reorganize the headings by dragging them to the desired location.

  1. Open the navigation menu image-2.png to reveal faceted browsing options. Expand relevant facets and choose the filters you want to restrict the displayed resources to those that match your selected criteria.

The Info Sidebar

You can find more information about a resource by opening the panel menu image-4.png (you can also press Cmd+Shift+I on a Mac or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows). This opens a sidebar displaying a summary of the resource, personal and community tags, a citation, copyright information, and more.

Prioritizing Resources

Prioritized resources will appear first when you click a Bible passage link, or in some search results. You can prioritize a resource, or several resources, by right-clicking the resource(s) and selecting Prioritize This Resource. This opens the Prefer these resources: panel. Drag resources to reorder the priority list. To un-prioritize a resource, right click it in the Prioritize panel and select Remove From This List.

Defining Collections

To create a custom collection of resources, select the resource(s) you want to add (You can select multiple resources by holding Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) while clicking the desired resource(s). Open the Info sidebar as described above, then select Save as Collection.

The Collections tool will open, providing you with additional options related to your new collection. To learn more about managing collections, see the article on the Collections tool.

Search Filtering

You can also use filter fields to perform advanced searches of your Library. Filter fields correspond to all of the fields that can be displayed in the details view (such as: author, title, type, etc.). To use a filter field, type the filter field, followed by a colon, then your search term. For example, entering “title:theology” will show all the resources that have the word “Theology” in their title. For more information on using filter fields, see the article Advanced Search.

Viewing and Editing Resource Information

You can view and modify information for a single resource, or for a group of resources, by using the Info window. You’ll notice that the window provides different options and information depending on whether you have one or multiple resources selected.

To rate a resource, click the rating stars image-10.png image-11.png. Your rating will overwrite the default rating for the resource, and will impact the order in which your search results appear when you sort by rating.

You can create custom tags for any resource. Resources you’ve tagged will appear when you enter the same tag in the Library search window. To tag a resource, select it, then click the Info icon to open the info panel. Scroll to the tags section and type a tag into the text box, then hit enter. To remove a tag, click on the X adjacent to the tag.

Citation/Save as Bibliography

Verbum generates a citation for every resource in your library. To cite a single resource, select it, then open the resource information panel. Scroll to the citation section. Click copy to add the citation to your clipboard. You may then paste the citation as you would any other text.

To generate a bibliography, select multiple resources in your library. Open the Info panel and click Save as Bibliography. A new bibliography window will appear with entries for your selected resources.

You can change your citation or bibliography style in the Verbum Program Settings. Click Tools > Utilities > Program Settings > Citation Style under the General heading.

Mobile Resource Management

You can use the Library to set which resources download to your mobile device(s) so they can be accessed while the device is offline. (The Verbum mobile app must be installed on the device, and must be linked to your user account). Select a resource, open the Info panel, then scroll to the Devices section. Checking the box will set your selected resource to download on your mobile device. Unchecking the box will remove that resource from your device (it will still be available when you have an internet connection).
