Accessing the Study Assistant

You can access the Study Assistant in a range of ways.

1. From the Toolbar or the Tools Menu
2. From the Factbook
3. From a Smart Search Synopsis
4. Using a link to a conversation that someone has shared with you

 

Using the Study Assistant from the Toolbar or Tools Menu

To access the Study Assistant from the Toolbar, click its icon (1) or to access it from the Tools menu, open the menu and select the Study Assistant (2). The User Interface on desktop and web are slightly different - with desktop being shown on the left and web on the right below.

 

Once you have opened the Study Assistant, you can start a conversation using the box at the bottom of the tool (1) or by clicking one of the sample questions to explore it (2). Alternatively, you can return to earlier conversations by clicking the Recent button (3). If you want to clear a current conversation and start again, click the New button (4).

 

Using the Study Assistant from the Factbook

The Study Assistant can be accessed from the Questions to Ask section of the Factbook Tool. If you open one of the questions you will see some responses to it. Click Ask a follow-up question... to open the Study Assistant with the current status of the conversation populated and the opportunity to ask a follow-up question.

 

Using the Study Assistant from a Smart Search Synopsis

The Study Assistant can also be accessed from a Smart Search Synopsis. Click Continue in Study Assistant to explore different aspects of the synopsis, this will cause the Study Assistant to open with the contents of the synopsis pasted into it.

Note: If you have used a Collection in the Smart Search, the same Collection will be selected in the Study Assistant to use in follow-up questions.

Using the Study Assistant from a shared link

At any point in an engagement with the Study Assistant, you can copy a link to the current state of the conversation. You can then send that link to anyone else and, when they access it, the Study Assistant will open to an exact copy of the conversation at that point enabling them to continue the conversation for themselves.

 

Having a Conversation with the Study Assistant

When you ask a question, and receive a response, you have the opportunity to continue the conversation.

For example, one of the responses above says that  prayer operates through faith and persistence. To explore that further, you can ask a follow-up question.

 

And you can continue to do this, exploring different topics of interest that occur.

You can modify questions you have asked by clicking the small pencil icon beneath the question and then either modifying it or choosing a different set of resources to work with.

 

Responses within Study Assistant include citations linked to the sources they engage with. Hover your cursor over one of the footnotes to see a snippet from the book and which part of the response (shown by the blue highlight) is drawn from that referenced book. Click the footnote, or the link in the small bibliography at the bottom of the response to open that book. A temporary highlight will show in the book indicating which part of the text is being used to generate the response.

 

If you would rather use your keyboard to navigate in the Study Assistant, press Tab to move forward through the footnotes and Shift+Tab to move backwards. You will still get a popup for the footnote currently in focus and you can press Enter to open the linked resource.

The buttons beneath the short bibliography enable you to:

1. Indicate the response was helpful
2. Indicate the response was not helpful
3. Copy the contents of the response to your clipboard

 

Click the Copy all button to copy the entire conversation, which you can then paste into another document, forward on to someone else or continue your study on it.

 

If you want to return to an earlier conversation, click the Recent button and select the conversation from the dropdown menu. And If you hover your cursor over a named conversation you will see a three-dots icon on the right - if you click this you can Open, Rename or Delete the conversation.

Customizing the Study Assistant

You can tell the Study Assistant to make use of the entire Verbum catalog or restrict its scope to books in your library.  You can further constrain the book selection in a number of ways:

• Selecting books in a particular collection
• Selecting a particular type of book - such as a lexicon
• Selecting a book series
• Selecting an individual book

 

If you want to scale the size of the panel, click the Font icon at the top right of the panel and select the Zoom level you require.

Using the Study Assistant from the app's menus

To access the Study Assistant from the app's action menu, open the menu and select the Study Assistant from the Tools section.

On a tablet, the Study Assistant can also be accessed from the Tools icon on the bottom bar.
