Exegetical Guide


An Exegetical Guide provides detailed information regarding the underlying Greek or Hebrew text in a biblical passage. It provides information regarding textual variants, discussion of grammatical details, visualization of clause structures and details of each word in the text.

This guide shows you how to access the Guide, how to choose the passage you want to study, and some of the key information provided in the Guide.


Accessing the Exegetical Guide

There are two main ways to generate an Exegetical Guide:

To generate an Exegetical Guide from the Guides menu: 

  1. Click Guides > Exegetical Guide:

Note: By default, the Exegetical Guide is pinned to the top of the Guides menu. It can also be accessed in the Guides section of the Guides menu.


To generate an Exegetical Guide on a specific passage:

  1. Type the passage in the reference box
  2. Press Enter, or choose from the list of presented options.


To generate an Exegetical Guide from a biblical passage you are studying:

  1. Highlight the passage you want to study, then right-click to open the context menu.
  2. Ensure that the reference is selected in the left pane of the context menu.
  3. Click Exegetical Guide on the right.


Using the Exegetical Guide

Scroll down the Exegetical Guide sections until you find ones that are relevant to your study. You can add additional guide sections by clicking Add at the top right of the Guide and checking the sections you’d like to appear. The sections and information available will depend on your Verbum base package and the resources you’ve purchased. These might include:


Textual Variants

This section provides access to text-critical information on the verse or passage you are studying. This includes links to textual commentaries, apparatus, and original language texts in your Library

Click one of these links to open the resource to the relevant passage.




This section lists articles from original language grammars that mention the passage you are studying. These articles are grouped by subject area. To look at grammars relating to a particular subject, click it and select an article.


Grammatical Construction

This section shows interesting grammatical features in the passage being studied. Hover over a construction to see what it means and click the “search for …” icon to find other occurrences of this particular construction in the biblical text.




This section shows resources in your Library that visually depict the structure of the biblical text. Click one to open it and hover over a node to show both its scope (indicated by orange lines) and its definition (in a popup box).


Word by Word

This section shows details (covering grammar, morphology, sense, and syntax) about each word in the passage. Click a word in a verse to go to the information about that word. Hover over an entry to get more details and click an entry to get more information, such as from a lexicon. 


Note: You can easily locate your passage in the lexicon you open by activating the “Emphasize Active References” visual filter.
